It’s the third week of December, which means we are getting closer to holiday time! Let’s lead this week with open hearts. This week we’re going to focus on poses that open your heart.
Stretching the muscles in your chest, shoulders, and belly can create a deep emotional release, helping you to appreciate and honor yourself and those you love.
Camel Pose (Ustrasana)
Camel Pose (variation)
Begin by kneeling on the ground and place your hands on your hips. Tops of feet should be resting on your mat. Lengthen your spine and bend backwards, placing your hands on your heels. (or you may bend back as far as you’re comfortable and rest hands on lower back, this will still give the same opening effect.) Elongate your neck and curl your head backwards. It’s important to keep the chest lifted throughout the pose to minimize the compression in the lower back. Slide your hands to the soles of your feet and remain in the position for 3-5 breaths. Reverse out of the pose by bringing the right hand to right hip, then the left hand to left hip. Press the knees down and use abdominal strength to lift and straighten the spine up. Namaste.
